Primary Focus involving horses (Horse Welfare, Public Service, Sport & Recreation):  Public Service

Our organization operates programs involved with providing equine assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) using certified instructors for individuals with special needs.

Our organization is directly responsible for the care of horses to provide its services.


Our Mission/How we are involved with horses:
Heads Up!, a PATH Intl. (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International) Premier accredited center , formed in 1991, provides therapeutic equine-related activities to individuals in central North Carolina with physical, emotional or developmental disabilities to enhance positive reinforcement and encouragement towards independence.


Volunteer Opportunities


Sidewalkers
Minimum Age: 14
Sidewalkers assist during a Therapeutic Riding Session. They are responsible for the safety of the rider during the session. They must be able to listen and follow directions from the instructor as well as use good judgment when working with the rider. Training is required and will be provided on site.

Leader
Minimum Age: 14
Leader's assist during Therapeutic Riding Sessions. Leader's are responsible for the safety of the horse during the lesson. Leader's must have horse knowledge and horse experience. Leader's also must be able to read the horse's body language. Training is required and is offered on site.

Barn Workers
Minimum Age: 12
Barn Workers do not help during Therapeutic Riding Sessions, although they will come in contact with clients and horses. Barn Workers help with barn chores that include mucking stalls, feeding, and general barn clean up duties. There is no training required but an orientation session is offered.
