MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
Ivy Hill provides equine-assisted services to all individuals in an inclusive and accessible environment designed to promote independence and confidence.

Our organization conducts Equine Assisted Services in accordance with the EQUUS Foundation Guidelines on Qualifications of Organizations Conducting Equine Assisted Services (EAS).
Our organization provides community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.
Our organization is directly responsible for the care and shelter of equines involved in our programs.
100% of our total programs and services are equine-related.

Our organization does not CURRENTLY use satellite, overflow, foster, and/or outreach facilities.


Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
Ivy Hill was proud to achieve PATH International Premier Accreditation status at the end of 2023. Our goal is to have at least to additional staff as CTRI through PATH International by the end of 2024. Our ground programs have grown to include serving not only schools and nursing homes but also Veterans and individuals struggling with addiction. We have branched out in our horse shows, participating in inclusive classes at traditional shows, merging neurodiverse individuals with typical peers. Our riders participate in therapeutic riding shows and also in therapeutic divisions at neurotypical horse shows. We have added a spring camp this year and have provided on site educational training (ex. our bodywork consultant hosted a Masterson Method clinic at our facility). We have maintained our Platinum level transparency for Candid, were recognized as Bucks County Herald's Best of the Region and were top rated by Great Non-Profits. Ivy Hill received grant funding from Wawa and Foundations Community Partnership. We gained additional volunteer groups from our community to come to Ivy Hill to assist with projects (Penn Pump and Equipment, Temple University Equestrian Team, Liberty Mutual). Our transitional work program groups expanded to include The Next Step, Bucks County Intermediate Unit, North Penn High School and Peaceful Living. We invited our local government officials (PA State Representative Labs and PA State Senator Coleman) to visit our program to make our program visible to the greater community and to seek additional grant funding opportunities. Our social media and marketing presence has expanded with the addition of a new PATH certified instructor who also assists with these duties. Our program relies on funding from donors, fundraisers and grants. Our long term plans include expanding our reach to locate and retain donors through a new donor management software as well as increasing our community outreach and grant applications. We are looking to create additional fundraising opportunities to help continue offset the cost of lessons for our riders and to continue to fund our financial aid program.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
     We currently provide therapeutic riding programming, camps and groundwork programs. Therapeutic riding is the use of the horse and other equine-based activities to reach the specific objectives of our differently abled population with special needs. Ivy Hill Therapeutic Equestrian Center provides therapeutic riding to over 120 individuals per week. Various disabilities of the riders served include autism, cerebral palsy, stroke/brain injury, genetic disorders, mental health disorders, and more. The horse becomes a partner and a therapeutic tool in achieving a variety of goals that are cognitive, physical, social, educational and behavioral.
     
     Our therapeutic riding instructors motivate our riders through tailored lesson plans designed to achieve their goals. Our instructors understand the therapeutic benefits of the horse and structure the lesson based on the different sensory, tactile, vestibular, proprioceptive, and emotional needs of our riders. Sessions are either 30 or 50 minutes and can be scheduled weekly or bi-weekly. A 30-minute session includes a riding lesson, and a 50-minute session includes a grooming and tacking portion in addition to the riding lesson. The combination of grounded horsemanship skills and mounted riding lessons creates a challenge that inspires confidence, encourages independence, and builds trust.
     
     We also provide ground programs for two programs: New Vitae (veterans) and Peace Valley Recovery Center (Addiction/recovery). These are not listed on our website as they are private sessions.


Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     Ivy Hill is all about community, both inside and outside of the barn. Whenever we can, we aim to collaborate and engage with community members, businesses, and partners, as all of these groups are part of the Ivy Hill family. Some of our community outreach programs include:
     
     NORTH PENN KNIGHTS-IN-TRAINING FOR EMPLOYMENT (KITE):
     
     Creating a Culture of Employment for All: A partnership between North Penn High School and community-based businesses to provide meaningful work experiences in preparing students with disabilities for future employment.
     
     K.I.T.E. intends to: introduce special education students to in-district and community paid and/or unpaid employment settings; expand vocational experience and interests in the community; develop “soft skills,” such as communication and problem-solving; provide opportunities to learn “hard skills,” such as those that can be listed on a resume; offer job coaching supports to decrease dependency and increase endurance; and collect data through evaluation systems that monitor progress.
     
     THE NEXT STEP PROGRAMS
     
     The Next Step Programs offer young adults opportunities to build skills for independence, create new friendships and explore everything our local community has to offer. Our Explore program is a full day community-based program, which includes work-based learning opportunities, social and recreational experiences, and community excursions.
     
     ST LUKE’S, PENN FOUNDATION’S WELLSPRING CLUBHOUSE
     
     This program is a Transitional Employment Program for adults with mental health challenges that have interfered with employment opportunities. This program was started several years ago, and the Wellspring staff and transitional employees have become an integral part of the Ivy Hill Family, helping us to carry out our mission.
     
     BUCKS COUNTY INTERMEDIATE UNIT SEQUEL PROGRAM
     
     SEQUEL is a part of the BCIU and assists adults with disabilities to explore meaningful leisure, volunteer, and employment opportunities within their community. SEQUEL has been specially designed to be person-centered and growth oriented. We are always excited to work with the BCIU and have these adults spend time at the barn.
     
     
     *We also have school groups and nursing facilities visit our facility. Currently we do not take equines off site for visits.

Research/Medical Use of Equines:
Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine. 

Religious Affiliation:
Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered.

Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter.

POLICIES: INTAKE, ASSESSMENT & TRAININING

Prior to a horse being accepted and/or arriving at the facility, the organization requires the following with respect to the health status of the horse:

    If health records are not available or are out-of-date, the owner is responsible for having vaccinations administered.
