MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
Our mission is to empower children and adults with or without physical, developmental, and mental health challenges through the use of Equine Assisted Services (EAS).
     
     Victoria Acres Equine Facility, Inc. (VAEF) provides programs that offer a complex and exciting means of therapy, which produces tangible physical, psychological, cognitive, social, and educational benefits to our clients. Our programs truly have a life-altering effect on our clients and their families.
     
     We offer a unique environment of unconditional support and acceptance. We provide opportunities for skill-building and personal achievement to individuals who face an array of daily challenges.

Our organization conducts Equine Assisted Services in accordance with the EQUUS Foundation Guidelines on Qualifications of Organizations Conducting Equine Assisted Services (EAS) and the Optimal Terminology Summit For Services That Incorporate Horses To Benefit People Report. Summary of organization's goals, strategies to achieve the goals, accomplishments, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
VAEF, as an organization, has the following goals:
     
     ● To provide programs that offer the highest level of standards in the industry. VAEF is a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH) Member Center that requires our center to follow industry standards in the areas of center administration, facility safety, and equine welfare.
     
     ● To create and foster community relationships with local organizations to broaden the number of clients our facility can serve.
     
     To date, VAEF has served over 200 families throughout our community and has formed lasting partnerships with organizations such as:
     
     ● Center for Disability Services
     ● Catholic Charities
     ● Living Resources
     ● The American Red Cross
     ● Office for People with Developmental
      Disabilities
     ● Parsons Child and Family Services
     ● Wildwood Programs
     ● The Autism Society of the Greater Capital
      Region
     
     VAEF has created a long-term sustainability plan which focuses on both strategic and operational levels of management. This plan outlines short-term goals while keeping sight of the long-term vision. The strategic plan has become a trusted tool in guiding our organization through the challenging year of 2020.
     
     The largest accomplishment VAEF achieved in 2020 was chartering the waters of the Covid-19 pandemic.
     The management team had never experienced anything like the pandemic. As a team, they created a financial plan, applied for Covid Relief and Grants, and kept our organization going during the shutdown.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
     VAEF offers PATH therapeutic riding, our Horse Sense Program, and adaptive physical education through a local school district. We have witnessed firsthand the incredible effects that equine therapy has had on our clients. They are developing both fine and gross motor skills, strength, balance, muscle control and purposeful speech.
     
     VAEF is a PATH Member Center that offers therapeutic riding to individuals of all ages that may face an array of disabilities. This designation sets us apart from other therapeutic riding centers. It requires our organization to follow a strict set of core industry standards and ethics created by the PATH. It ensures continued guidance and safety for our programs and facility. PATH certified instructors are required to complete extensive training, 25 hours of mentoring and workshops as well as on-site Registered Instructor Certification. Currently, we have two PATH certified instructors.
     
     Participants in our Horse Sense Program learn general horse care and safety. In addition to learning how to lead, groom, and care for horses, participants learn either ground-working or riding. Our clients who struggle with social interactions, develop and improve their sense of responsibility, self-confidence, and self-respect. This equine-assisted activity requires the participants to address issues such as communication, trust, honesty, accountability, responsibility, patience, relationships, self-respect, respect for others, self-confidence, anger, and increased social skills.


At a time when equestrian sports are under pressure to protect horses while making those sports more accessible, so too must all equine organizations ensure that horses are treated humanely when interacting with people with and without special needs. Our organization takes the following steps to ensure that horses are benefiting from their interactions with people:
     VAEF offers weekly ground working lessons to our equine partners that are used in our PATH lesson program. Our ground-working program allows our equines to decompress from their weekly lessons. Activities such as obstacle courses and games keep our horses balanced - physically, mentally, and emotionally.
     
     In addition to the above, our veterinarian/chiropractor offers regular visits to adjust our equines and provides acupuncture to those that can benefit from that service as well. VAEF also provides our equines with veterinarian recommended supplements and medications.


Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     VAEF offers volunteering opportunities in both our equine-assisted therapy programs as well as caring for our animals at our facility.
     
     We strive to educate, empower, and encourage all our participants, their families and our volunteers as well as being an educational resource to our community.
     
     Our Horse Sense Program has also had a profound impact on our organization, its staff, and volunteers. When we see our participants progress into strong, empowered leaders, we feel that we have made a true difference in the life of an individual, a family, and the community. Our participants smile ear to ear when they have accomplished what they have so badly desired. There is no better feeling in the world than to celebrate that success with them and their families.
     
     VAEF is in the process of building a partnership with the Center for Disability Services in Albany, NY to provide our Horse Sense Program to its clients. The Center for Disability Services is a major resource for people with disabilities in our community.
     
     VAEF is also forging a relationship with a local school district to provide a cohort of special needs students of an under-served population an adaptive physical education program. This program will be the first of its kind in our community.
