MISSION & PROGRAMS

Our organization provides programs involved with equine rescue, adoption & retirement
Our organization provides equine-assisted activities and/or therapies (EAAT) for individuals with special needs using instructors, specialists, therapists, counselors, trainers and/or facilitators (full-time, part-time, independent contractors, and/or service providers) who have certified training applicable for people with special needs and specific to the program offerings - either on staff or accompanying clients when participating in our programs.
Our organization provides community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.

Mission:
We rescue horses- rehab them, retrain them and rehome them to safe forever homes. Just as important in our mission is helping people to realize their own potential as they help these horses on their journeys. We do this through youth and adult volunteer programs.

Overview of our programs involved with rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, re-homing and/or retirement:
     We take in horses from all backgrounds, primarily standardbreds off the racetrack or slaughter/auction. We rehabilitate the horses, and retrain them under saddle to make them more adoptable. We match each horse with a forever home. Horses stay will us if they are not adopted. We have many companion only horses as well. We screen potential adopters to ensure a good fit between horse and human. We do a farm check and visit where they will keep the horse. We follow up every year with a required Vet Check and pictures. We take back all of our horses no matter what the reason. We have a no breeding and selling clause in our adoption contracts. We engage with the community for humane education and animal welfare.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAAT to individuals with special needs:
     We have trainers that work with individuals from varying backgrounds. We have groups that come from adult day psychiatric units. We have groups from the local VA Hospital. We do trust exercises, ground work, training with these staff and individuals. When appropriate staff form the day homes, or assistants come with the individuals participating in the Equine assisted activities. Rehab staff from the VA accompany Veterans groups. we coordinate with these agencies to have the appropriately trained staff with the individuals that can benefit from equine activities.
     
     We also work with youth community groups as well as folks that are required to do volunteer work on the level they need and that is appropriate.

At a time when equestrian sports are under pressure to protect horses while making those sports more accessible, so too must all equine organizations ensure that horses are treated humanely when interacting with people with and without special needs. Our organization takes the following steps to ensure that horses are benefiting from their interactions with people: *Missing


Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     We attend community outreach's functions regularly. We partner with Dog and cat rescues in the area. We annually support the helping hounds rescue at their open house and the program with canine rescue at the county correctional facility. We attend inner city festivals and bring our animals to teach humane education and animal welfare.
     We partner with the Syracuse VAMC to do grooming and trust exercises with PTSD Veterans. Every Tuesday Adult day groups from Hutching psychiatric center come to our barn to help with chores and trust exercises.

DEFINITIONS:
Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies (EAAT): Any activity that incorporates equine interactions and/or the equine environment, mounted or ground-based, including horsemanship instruction aimed at contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of individuals with special needs, psychotherapy and/or mental health counseling aimed at achieving goals set forth by the mental health professional and the client, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology treatment strategies that utilize equine movement, and experiential learning approaches that promote the development of life skills for educational, professional and personal goals.

Special Needs: Any difficulty or difficulties (such as a physical, emotional, behavioral, or learning disability or impairment) that require or benefit from assistance and support from certified specialists, therapists, counselors, instructors, trainers and/or facilitators. The difficulty may not be limited to a health issue but may result from the interaction between the individual and the society in which he or she lives arising from an abusive or unhealthy environment and a lack of resources, including economic resources, which can impact an individual's ability to successfully transition into adulthood and being at-risk of a future with less than optimal outcomes.

At-Risk: Refers to being at-risk of a future with less than optimal outcomes. Youth are considered at-risk for a number of reasons, such as if they are homeless or transient, involved in drugs or alcohol, abused sexually, physically or emotionally, mentally ill, neglected at home or live in stressful family environments, lacking social or emotional supports, and involved with delinquent peers. At-Risk youth are likely to be involved in a number of risky behaviors, such as running away, skipping school, drinking under age, engaging in sexual behavior, displaying disruptive behavior, bullying/harassment, fighting, and committing acts of vandalism.
