MISSION & PROGRAMS

Our organization provides equine-assisted activities and/or therapies (EAAT) for individuals with special needs using instructors, specialists, therapists, counselors, trainers and/or facilitators (full-time, part-time, independent contractors, and/or service providers) who have certified training applicable for people with special needs and specific to the program offerings - either on staff or accompanying clients when participating in our programs.
Our organization provides community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAAT to individuals with special needs:
     BBFAF's programs are client- centered and are designed to meet our clients' special needs. Some of our Veterans come to us through word of mouth, others come from local Veteran organizations like the county of Lancaster VA offices, Veteran's Victory House in Lancaster, Coatesville VA, Lebanon VA and Vet Court in Lancaster. Many of the veterans who have come through our program have a diagnosis of PTSD, TBI, depression, or anxiety and our equine-assisted therapeutic approach for each client is based on where they are and what they need. We offer individual, family, couples and group sessions for veteran and their families at no cost. The following is the structure of our current sessions. We require additional funds to increase the number of sessions we can offer in the future.
     
     Group Session - Saturday from 9 am to 12pm. - Sets of sessions are 6 weeks long with a two-week break and then begin another 6 week session. Group sessions alternate between veteran’s group and caregiver’s group. For each set of group sessions we work with another nonprofit, Write Face, to combine and increase therapeutic impact. Write Face helps Veterans through journaling and creative writing, which combined with equine assisted activities, is impactful. From 9am to 10:30am clients gather in a group to begin the journaling part of the group program. During this time the facilitator and clients read a poem and then talk about their thoughts, feelings, reactions, connections to the poem. There is no right or wrong answer. It is about the client's connection and experience of the poem or parts of the poem. After the reading and discussion clients do some journaling in response to a writing prompt that is related to the poem or the content of the conversation around the poem. From 10:30am to 11:30am clients move outside to the arena or pastures to work with the horses based on client needs. During the equine assisted psychotherapy session a mental health specialist and an equine specialist work with clients to process issues, feelings, emotions, thoughts, etc that come up for the clients during the activity/experience with horses. All therapeutic work is done on the ground, no riding is involved and clients do not need any prior horse experience. After the equine assisted therapy session clients return to writing area to do reflective writing.
     
     Weekly Sessions-Currently there are three weekly sessions that run 60 minutes each. The first session is from 10:30am to 11:30am, second session is from 11:30am to 12:30pm and the third session is from 12:30pm to 1:30pm. These session times are used for individual, family, or couples equine assisted psychotherapy. Each session is facilitated by a mental health specialist and an equine specialist. Activities or exercises with the horse are designed based on the therapeutic needs of the client(s). Currently there is one individual session, a family session and a couples’ session every Thursday.

At a time when equestrian sports are under pressure to protect horses while making those sports more accessible, so too must all equine organizations ensure that horses are treated humanely when interacting with people with and without special needs. Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     BBFAF has worked with the Lancaster County Tech Center to provide a learning site with vet tech students to observe floating our horses teeth by an equine dentist, observing administration of shots and practice wrapping legs and tails.
     
     BBFAF has given demos on the farm informing the community about our services, the amazing world of horses, and their ability to heal and create change.

DEFINITIONS:
Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies (EAAT): Any activity that incorporates equine interactions and/or the equine environment, mounted or ground-based, including horsemanship instruction aimed at contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of individuals with special needs, psychotherapy and/or mental health counseling aimed at achieving goals set forth by the mental health professional and the client, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology treatment strategies that utilize equine movement, and experiential learning approaches that promote the development of life skills for educational, professional and personal goals.

Special Needs: Any difficulty or difficulties (such as a physical, emotional, behavioral, or learning disability or impairment) that require or benefit from assistance and support from certified specialists, therapists, counselors, instructors, trainers and/or facilitators. The difficulty may not be limited to a health issue but may result from the interaction between the individual and the society in which he or she lives arising from an abusive or unhealthy environment and a lack of resources, including economic resources, which can impact an individual's ability to successfully transition into adulthood and being at-risk of a future with less than optimal outcomes.

At-Risk: Refers to being at-risk of a future with less than optimal outcomes. Youth are considered at-risk for a number of reasons, such as if they are homeless or transient, involved in drugs or alcohol, abused sexually, physically or emotionally, mentally ill, neglected at home or live in stressful family environments, lacking social or emotional supports, and involved with delinquent peers. At-Risk youth are likely to be involved in a number of risky behaviors, such as running away, skipping school, drinking under age, engaging in sexual behavior, displaying disruptive behavior, bullying/harassment, fighting, and committing acts of vandalism.

Additional information about our acquisition policies and practices:
All of our therapy horses are ex-race horses/and or ex-broodmares. These horses have found their forever homes. The horses that are at the farm will live out their natural lives here. All horses have jobs as a therapy horse in some capacity. When one of our family members is no longer on the earth with us then we will have the room to add new family members.
