MISSION & PROGRAMS

Our organization provides equine-assisted activities and/or therapies (EAAT) for individuals with special needs using instructors, specialists, therapists, counselors, trainers and/or facilitators (full-time, part-time, independent contractors, and/or service providers) who have certified training applicable for people with special needs and specific to the program offerings - either on staff or accompanying clients when participating in our programs.
Our organization provides community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.

Mission:
The mission of Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy is to serve individuals with physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities and hardship by providing equine assisted activities and therapies to empower, inspire, nurture and succeed.

Our organization is dedicated to ensuring financial and organizational sustainability. Southern Reins has developed a 3-5 year Strategic Plan to ensure we can meet the demands of our continued program growth. Our core values are to maintain safety, innovation and accountability.
     
     The plan includes identifying our 5 key pillars: Program Development, Organizational Awareness, Financial Sustainability, People and Facility Management.
     
     To ensure the sustainability of Southern Reins, we are:
     
     Developing a program growth matrix to identify ways to increase efficiencies to reduce the funding gap and ensure necessary infrastructure is in place for expansion.
     
     Increasing organizational awareness to attract, develop and retain donors, volunteers and advocates for our program.
     
     Evaluating funding streams to identify additional revenue sources, and maintaining an operating reserve.
     
     Investing in our people to implement a succession plan, Board and staff development, and volunteer engagement and recognition.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAAT to individuals with special needs:
     Our vision is to provide transformative experiences through equine assisted activities and therapies to serve the growing needs of the Mid-South community.
     
     Founded in 2015, Southern Reins offers equine-assisted activities and therapies to children and adults in Shelby County and DeSoto County. We offer 8 programs at our center, including therapeutic horseback riding, horsemanship and ground lessons through our Unbridled Horsemanship Program, Hippotherapy, equine assisted psychotherapy, Making Strides Recreation Therapy Program, Silver Stirrups, equine assisted learning and PATH Intl. Equine Services for Heroes.
     
     We support individuals with disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, amputation, mental and physical disabilities, attention deficit disorder, and more.
     
     Programs are offered throughout the year with five lesson sessions hosted in the winter, spring, summer, fall and holiday. Sessions range in length from 3 weeks to 10 weeks, with a total of 39 weekly lessons per year. Our participants range in age from 2 to 78, with no upper limit to age.
     
     Southern Reins has grown from a fledgling non-profit serving 12 participants each week to a therapy center that served 189 participants in 2018. Our programs are designed to focus on the ability of our participants to enhance life skills and goals. We support and encourage each participant to help them go as far as they can go: physically, emotionally and cognitively.

At a time when equestrian sports are under pressure to protect horses while making those sports more accessible, so too must all equine organizations ensure that horses are treated humanely when interacting with people with and without special needs. Our organization takes the following steps to ensure that horses are benefiting from their interactions with people:
     We monitor our horses to ensure they enjoy their job. Our horses and ponies are routinely handled throughout the day and any changes in disposition or demeanor are immediately brought to the attention of the Equine Director. We strive to set our horses up for success in all participant interactions, and if a horse is acting out of the ordinary, we take time to evaluate any issues that may be contributing to that behavior. We also pair participants with horses to provide a complimentary interaction. In all of our programs, we closely monitored those interactions to ensure the safety and well being of both participant and horse.
     
     We work hard to ensure the horses are benefiting from their interactions by identifying the jobs the horse likes to do, and what they do not like to do. For example, we have one horse who prefers to have sidewalkers and a horse leader versus being ridden independently by the participant (where she will often halt, or walk toward the instructor instead of follow the direction of her rider). She is often used in our Hippotherapy program and for more hands-on participants because she thrives being surrounded by people. We have two horses who do not respond well to sidewalkers, but who are amazing independent riding horses, so they provide support for our more independent participants. Based on what our horses 'tell' us, we ensure that they are used in a way that is beneficial to them and in a capacity that maximizes their strengths.
     
     We have not experienced any situation where a horse may be treated inhumanely or been put into a situation that could cause them distress.


Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     Southern Reins offers educational outreach to share the benefits of equine therapy to individuals, businesses and community partners to learn more about equine therapy. We provide tours of our facility weekly and encourage public participation as volunteers, advocates and supporters of equine assisted activities and therapies.

DEFINITIONS:
Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies (EAAT): Any activity that incorporates equine interactions and/or the equine environment, mounted or ground-based, including horsemanship instruction adapted to the ability/disability of those receiving services aimed at contributing positively to their cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being, psychotherapy and/or mental health counseling aimed at achieving goals set forth by the mental health professional and the client, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology treatment strategies that utilize equine movement, and experiential learning approaches that promote the development of life skills to achieve educational, professional and personal goals.

Special Needs: Any difficulty or difficulties (such as a physical, emotional, behavioral, or cognitive disability or impairment) that require or benefit from instructors, specialists, counselors, trainers and/or facilitators who have certified training for their scope of practice applicable to the people participating in the programs and specific to the program offerings. The difficulty may not be limited to a health issue but may result from the interaction between the individual and the society in which he or she lives arising from an abusive or unhealthy environment or situation and/or a lack of resources, including economic resources, placing them at risk of a future with less than optimal outcomes.

At-Risk: Refers to being at-risk of a future with less than optimal outcomes. Youth are considered at-risk for a number of reasons, such as if they are homeless or transient, involved in drugs or alcohol, abused sexually, physically or emotionally, mentally ill, neglected at home or live in stressful family environments, lacking social or emotional supports, and involved with delinquent peers. At-Risk youth are likely to be involved in a number of risky behaviors, such as running away, skipping school, drinking under age, engaging in sexual behavior, displaying disruptive behavior, bullying/harassment, fighting, and committing acts of vandalism.

Additional information about our acquisition policies and practices:
Therapy horses are assessed by our program and given consideration based on the needs of the program for certain types of horses (height, width, etc.) and the following factors:
     
     Height vs. weight carrying ability, temperament, training and trainability, soundness, confirmation, health, movement, adaptability and age.
     
     All therapy horses who enter our program undergo a 60-day trial where they are evaluated for suitablility. Equines are exposed to adaptive equipment, such as wheelchairs and walkers, mock lessons including a horse leader and sidewalkers, exposure to arena obstacles and learning tools, and more during this time period. All horses are assessed with an evaluation prior to entering the program and at the conclusion of their trial that has a ranked number. Based on the final number, the equine will be deemed suitable or will be returned to their owner.

Southern Reins has not had to place an equine with a new home, as the majority of our therapy horses are on loan and they would return to their owners.
