MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
The mission of Runnin’ Free Ranch (RFR) is to provide a non-judgmental, non-pressured environment where veterans, at-risk youth, individuals with special needs and their families can experience freedom, hope and positive life-changing relationships through the facilitation of equine assisted counseling and activities. We offer professional counseling services, mentoring programs and group sessions, utilizing equine assisted counseling/activities free of charge.

Our organization conducts Equine Assisted Services in accordance with the EQUUS Foundation Guidelines on Qualifications of Organizations Conducting Equine Assisted Services (EAS) and the Optimal Terminology Summit For Services That Incorporate Horses To Benefit People Report. Our organization provides community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.

Summary of organization's goals, strategies to achieve the goals, accomplishments, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
Runnin Free Ranch has served 641 individual clients and facilitated 2,000 equine assisted counseling sessions, at no charge to the client, since its inception in 2015. The Ranch is of humble beginnings, operating on about 2 acres with 2 full size horses and one pony. Weekly equine assisted counseling sessions are facilitated by our horses, one licensed professional counselor and one equine specialist, with a handful of volunteers.
     
     In 2015 we only had 7 clients and facilitated 20 sessions. In 2020 we served 175 individuals and facilitated 580 sessions. Runnin Free Ranch’s ongoing goals are to offer professional equine assisted counseling at no cost to the client, continue to grow as a viable mental health resource in our community and continue to increase our sponsors for individual equine assisted counseling sessions that will enable our services to be accessible to those who need it most in our community. The Ranch’s heart is to remove barriers to those needing exceptional, innovative and professional mental health services facilitated through equine assisted counseling.
     
     The one counselor and equine specialist has had training through Natural Lifemanship and EAGALA.
     Our local school district has added Runnin Free Ranch to their referral list of mental health resources. The Ranch has established a partnership with a mental health group who refers foster children and their families to Runnin Free Ranch. This service is at no cost to these families however, the agency reimburses the Ranch for services provided. Doctors and other counseling agencies refer to the Ranch. Runnin Free Ranch continues to receive support from the Greater Ennis United Way. The Ranch is a member of our local Chamber of Commerce.
     
     The Ranch’s long term goals are to relocate to a larger facility to be able to increase our services by adding more horses, specifically horses acquired from rescues, and at least one more licensed professional counselor and equine specialist.
     
     In order to sustain our program the Ranch plans to solicit more monthly sponsors to cover session and horse expenses. The Ranch continues to ask for sponsors for each horse. The Ranch plans to continue to apply for grants and increase our donor base.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
     Runnin Free Ranch exists to provide freedom to those held captive by the pain of their past, hope to those who are weary and life giving relationships through professional equine assisted counseling sessions. Each session is facilitated by a licensed professional counselor, an equine specialist and one or more horses.
     
     Runnin Free Ranch provides individual counseling sessions, group sessions, mentoring programs and Operation Freedom to veterans, individuals with special needs, at-risk youth and their families through the facilitation of equine assisted counseling/activities and trauma focused equine assisted psychotherapy. Runnin Free Ranch provides opportunities to learn communication skills, team building, goal setting, confidence building, personal insight and how to build healthy connected relationships through the human/horse relationship experience.
     
     We offer professional equine assisted counseling year round to ages 5 years old and up. The equine assisted counseling program works with at-risk youth, individuals on the autistic spectrum, those with cognitive disabilities, developmental delays or disabilities, language impairments, behavioral disorders, attention deficit disorder,mental health disabilities, emotional disabilities, genetic conditions/disorders, head trauma/brain Injury, intellectual disability, juvenile delinquency, learning disabilities, obsessive compulsive disorder, substance abuse issues, anxiety, depression. Before clients are accepted into the equine assisted counseling program an intake is conducted to determine if the individual is a good fit, will benefit from the equine assisted counseling and a treatment plan is assessed.
     
     We also offer a summer youth program called Freedom Trail that focuses on building a relationship with your horse to work on trust, respect, assertiveness, intrapersonal and interpersonal change, and accepting responsibility for personal choices through group activities. Runnin Free Ranch also facilitates equine therapy through ground work activities to local nursing homes residents who have experienced strokes and other geriatric issues.
     
     Our Operation Freedom Program works with veterans dealing with PTSD.


At a time when equestrian sports are under pressure to protect horses while making those sports more accessible, so too must all equine organizations ensure that horses are treated humanely when interacting with people with and without special needs. Our organization takes the following steps to ensure that horses are benefiting from their interactions with people:
     We are very aware of how each horse spends time with each client. We do not allow one horse to be worked with more than 3 times in one day. After sessions we allow open pasture time and positive interaction with the co-founders and/or volunteers. However, the licensed professional counselor and equine handler consult after each session to discuss how they believe the session affected the equine. If the session was particularly intense for the equine, it may be determined that for the best interest of the equine that he be allowed to have a break and not be partnered with another client for that day.

     We have a summer youth program called Freedom Trail, senior program where residents of local nursing homes come to Runnin Free Ranch to experience equine activities.
     
     We offer equine activities and counseling to veterans with PTSD called Operation Freedom.
     Mentoring Programs for our youth and young adults incorporating equine activities.
     
     We offer equine assisted learning opportunities to our local churches and businesses.

The Ranch's main focus is adopting rescued horses that will be good partners in equine assisted counseling sessions. Two of our horses were adopted from a horse rescue called Throwaway Ponies and a third horse was donated by the owner who rescued him from a kill pen.

      Runnin Free Ranch has daily onsite visual observation for any variations in horses appearance. Runnin Free Ranch also uses the weight tape measurements to monitor any physical changes.
