We are proud to be an EQUUS Foundation 2019 Guardian and share our horse care & use practices with the public.

MISSION & PROGRAMS

Our organization provides equine-assisted activities and/or therapies (EAAT) for individuals with special needs using instructors, specialists, therapists, counselors, trainers and/or facilitators (full-time, part-time, independent contractors, and/or service providers) who have certified training applicable for people with special needs and specific to the program offerings - either on staff or accompanying clients when participating in our programs.
Our organization provides community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.

Mission:
Riding Unlimited it dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with physical, intellectual and emotional disabilities through the power of the horse. We teach horsemanship skills while incorporating an element of therapy into each riding lesson. We turn disabilities into possibilities, one ride at a time.

Summary of organization's goals, strategies to achieve the goals, accomplishments, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
Our goal as a program is to provide our clients with a quality outcome based form of therapy at an affordable price. Many of our clients are financially challenged due to increased daily expenses related to living with a disability. In order to offer quality horsemanship lessons, we provide all of our instructors with continuing education opportunities. These include riding lessons with a trainer, webinars pertaining to their profession as an equine therapy instructor and disabilities, seminars with other equine professionals who provide similar services and professionals teaching horse care and treatments. All of our instructors follow the PATH Int'l standards of meeting continued education hours which keeps them current in the proficiency of providing equine therapy. Our program continues to grow as we partner with the University of North Texas and Texas Women's University to research the quality of life pertaining to equine therapy as well as providing local veterans an opportunity to benefit from this same partnership by providing them with free services to them and their families.
     As we establish a working relationship with each University, we extend the audience we are able to reach which includes the opportunity to seek additional funding sources. Given our 29 years in business, we have a proven formula of seeking support from grants, foundations, and hosting fundraisers to allow us to continue our mission.
     Our designation as a Premier Accredited facility with PATH Int’l puts us in good standing while reaching out to professionals who are seeking partnerships to provide other forms of equine therapy such as Equine Assisted Learning and Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. Our certified staff and program demonstrate our ability to provide a safe, effective program. Our long-term goal is to include these additional services as part of our program in order to sustain a presence in the equine therapy field. We are also establishing a partnership with a local equine rescue group (Arabian Rescue Therapy) that also provides these services with the goal of leaning from each other.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAAT to individuals with special needs:
     We teach horsemanship skills while incorporating therapies to enhance and improve the lives of those with disabilities ages 4 through senior citizen.
     Through obstacle courses our clients learn eye-hand coordination, experience improved balance and muscle strength, they learn sequencing, communication and task analysis. During ground lessons our clients learn to groom and tack their horse which builds a horse – human bond plus expands on the communication element while in the saddle. This time also allows all clients of all ages to experience the ability of the horse to read and reflect on the clients emotions. Horses do not judge, they do not lie and this time spent with them is healing on many levels. Young riders struggling with self-esteem discover a new kind of relationship and trust. Our senior riders find this time to be peaceful and relaxing which translates to improved mood and often sparks memories from their youth. The social aspect of equine therapy benefits both young and old alike. Young riders find a new peer group to associate with and senior clients who are often alone or isolated in other areas of their lives find a new found activity that brings them together for a common purpose.

At a time when equestrian sports are under pressure to protect horses while making those sports more accessible, so too must all equine organizations ensure that horses are treated humanely when interacting with people with and without special needs. Our organization takes the following steps to ensure that horses are benefiting from their interactions with people:
     We have a group of volunteers working with staff and a horse trainer to identify horse behavior that may indicate a negative reaction from a horse that is interacting with the special needs riders. The subtle body language of a horse indicating stress or discomfort is managed by removing the horse from the situation followed by relaxation through stretching, grooming and hand grazing. For clients that are physically and cognitively capable, part of their riding lessons include grooming the horse before and after the lesson which is an enjoyable experience for both horse and human in most cases.
     For horses that are used strictly for ground lessons, we limit the number of hours they work with clients that may cause anxiety in the horse. Weekly meetings allow staff to discuss any potential negative experiences with client interaction with their horse.
     Lastly, we have a team of volunteers working with our instructors who meet to ride the horses in a mix of different environments which keeps their minds engaged and their bodies in good shape. Having experienced riders exercise the horses provides them with a totally different riding experience. When the horses are not being used in class, they are turned out to their pastures and only brought back in to eat twice a day. This allows them natural down time so when we do ask them to work with the special needs community, they have built up a reserve of energy needed to handle the emotional or physical demands.


Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     We provide hands on learning experiences for local college students, church youth groups, adult day care for special needs clients, and a highschool special needs work release program for our local highschools. The special needs indivduals learn basic horse care, safety around horses, stable management, and how to groom and tack a horse.The church groups work on facility management in addition to all aspects of the program. The college students are placed in the classes to work with the instructors learning how the benefits of equine therapies apply to their chosen field of educational training.

DEFINITIONS:
Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies (EAAT): Any activity that incorporates equine interactions and/or the equine environment, mounted or ground-based, including horsemanship instruction adapted to the ability/disability of those receiving services aimed at contributing positively to their cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being, psychotherapy and/or mental health counseling aimed at achieving goals set forth by the mental health professional and the client, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech-language pathology treatment strategies that utilize equine movement, and experiential learning approaches that promote the development of life skills to achieve educational, professional and personal goals.

Special Needs: Any difficulty or difficulties (such as a physical, emotional, behavioral, or cognitive disability or impairment) that require or benefit from instructors, specialists, counselors, trainers and/or facilitators who have certified training for their scope of practice applicable to the people participating in the programs and specific to the program offerings. The difficulty may not be limited to a health issue but may result from the interaction between the individual and the society in which he or she lives arising from an abusive or unhealthy environment or situation and/or a lack of resources, including economic resources, placing them at risk of a future with less than optimal outcomes.

At-Risk: Refers to being at-risk of a future with less than optimal outcomes. Youth are considered at-risk for a number of reasons, such as if they are homeless or transient, involved in drugs or alcohol, abused sexually, physically or emotionally, mentally ill, neglected at home or live in stressful family environments, lacking social or emotional supports, and involved with delinquent peers. At-Risk youth are likely to be involved in a number of risky behaviors, such as running away, skipping school, drinking under age, engaging in sexual behavior, displaying disruptive behavior, bullying/harassment, fighting, and committing acts of vandalism.
