We are proud to be an EQUUS Foundation Guardian and share our horse care & use practices with the public.

MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
Eagle Mount Great Falls provides therapeutic and recreational activities for children, adults and veterans of all ages with physical, developmental, mental and/or behavioral challenges, striving to improve the quality of life for them and their families.

Our organization conducts Equine Assisted Services in accordance with the EQUUS Foundation Guidelines on Qualifications of Organizations Conducting Equine Assisted Services (EAS) and the Optimal Terminology Summit For Services That Incorporate Horses To Benefit People Report. Our organization provides community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.

Summary of organization's goals, strategies to achieve the goals, accomplishments, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
Our organization provides adaptive recreation to individuals of all ages with disabilities. Our goals are to find the ABILITY in disability and to give our participants an experience they would not otherwise be able to do without adaptive assistance. Our staff is trained in the programs they work and we accomplish our goal everyday we receive a smile or triumphant, "I did it!" Many of our participants come to us scared, weary, anxious and thinking there is no way they could do this and leave with an accomplishment to a dream and hope for the future. Life is an adventure is our moto because we never know how each day will go. We Adapt, We Achieve, We Empower.
     
     Our long-term plans to sustain our programs is to get the public more involved in learning what we do through Equine Assisted Learning sessions - at our facility and traveling with our horses. We also do fundraising and have an endowment.
     
     2020 was a hard year for us with COVID-19 keeping us shut down for much of it. We were able to do some programming just within our equestrian program. Our equestrian program was the only program that kept us moving forward as we could utilize the outdoors and social distancing. We implemented extra cleaning protocols and taught our participants about the importance of personal hygiene, respecting others and additional animal care skills that we continue to use. We were able to travel with our horses to nursing homes reaching our elderly disabled that were completely cut off from the world due to Covid-19. The residents at these facilities were able to come outside with masks, socially spaced and hand sanitizers to see our horses. This gave them a much needed break from the indoor confinement they have been under for months. Our horses brought them smiles and a moment of relief and enjoyment. Our traveling program continues on and is a favorite amongst our community.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
     At our Equestrian Center we serve ages 6 years and up. Individuals must have a doctor diagnosed disability, which can be physical, developmental, mental and/or behavioral. We also allow families of the participant who is disabled to join in on classes to help with inclusion and family bonding.
     
     We are a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH, Intl) Member Center and employ a PATH, Intl Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor and Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning.
     
     Equine-Assisted Activities such as Therapeutic Riding and Equine Assisted Learning are available for:
     Individual or group sessions.
     Mounted or unmounted sessions.
     Special groups.
     Veteran opportunities.
     Our traveling horses: Group, nursing, and retirement homes; Schools and other interested groups.


At a time when equestrian sports are under pressure to protect horses while making those sports more accessible, so too must all equine organizations ensure that horses are treated humanely when interacting with people with and without special needs. Our organization takes the following steps to ensure that horses are benefiting from their interactions with people:
     All staff and volunteers go through our training before being allowed to work with our horses. This training teaches them about who are horses are, what the do and how they do it. It lays out details of what each person does in a class, during exercise and during feeding. Staff, volunteers and participants must also sign off on a code of conduct. We will refuse service to anyone that brings physical or mental harm to our horses.
     
     Our horses are looked at everyday during feeding time to check for injury or burnout. We give them the necessary nutrition through CHS feed and quality hay as well as needed exercise to maintain a healthy life while in our care. We have a veterinarian, chiropractor and a nutritionist who all evaluate them on a regular or as needed basis.
     
     Burnout from their job is common. We work hard to give our horses mental and physical breaks on a regular basis.
     
     2020 gave us a year to implement additional protocols to keep you participants, volunteers, staff and animals safer. We will continue to utilize many of our extra protocols to ensure we are prepared for any future emergencies as well as including the new protocols into our activities. This will enhance our lessons and continue to help our participants learn routine personal hygiene and respect for others and animals.



Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     We provide a program, EMPACT, that uses Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) sessions to help bring the horse activities from the arena back to "real life", inviting people to reflect, generalize and apply new insights. Our EMPACT program helps individuals or groups with team work, leadership skills, communication and much more. We hold these sessions at our facility but also travel with our horses to educate and provide a one-on-one horse experience.

Our Programs/Activities that are not equine-related and/or involving animals other than equines:
 Our mission: To provide therapeutic and recreational activities for children, adults and veterans of all ages with physical, developmental, mental and/or behavioral challenges, striving to improve the quality of life for them and their families. We offer exciting programs that allow infants, youth, adults, veterans and seniors with challenges (who we call our "participants") to explore recreation and take on new adventures based on their abilities, not their disabilities. Other recreational activities besides horsemanship include Tippy Toes (creative movement and play for infants and toddlers), Alpine Ski and Board, Sled Hockey, Montana Vet Program (MVP) and other miscellaneous activities including, but not limited to Climbing, Soccer, Pontoon and Rafting.

All hours worked with horses whether in training, classes, exercises, etc are recorded on a daily basis. Records are also kept regarding behaviors, health, changes, injuries, etc. This helps us see how much each horse is being worked, who is working with the horses and for what. It also helps us determine reasons for burnout, injuries, or unusual behaviors that may come up.

Additional information about our grounds:
Inclement weather: Weather is constantly watched for any incoming inclement weather that would affect our herd. We bring horses indoors and use the enclosed arena and available stalls as needed to house horses until inclement weather has passed and it is safe for them to be out in their paddocks again. We also utilize horse blankets for horses that are unable to handle any cold weather. Because Montana winters can be harsh at times we have posted Reminders (check lists/emergency procedures) for all of our caretakers that cover how to check horses, feeding extra hay, bringing horses indoors if needed, making sure auto-waters are running properly and heat sources to prevent water from freezing are functioning, etc. Our direct neighbors have our contact information and inform us if there are any issues if we are not there. All areas/stalls and materials used are cleaned and disinfected after used.
