MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
Healing with Horses Ranch is a 501(c)(3) non-profit equine-assisted learning and therapy center that promotes resilience and independence in mind, body, and soul through the power of the horse. We want to change lives, not just touch lives.

Our organization conducts Equine Assisted Services in accordance with the EQUUS Foundation Guidelines on Qualifications of Organizations Conducting Equine Assisted Services (EAS) and the Optimal Terminology Summit For Services That Incorporate Horses To Benefit People Report. Our organization provides community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.

Summary of organization's goals, strategies to achieve the goals, accomplishments, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
In 2018, Healing with Horses Ranch became a PATH Intl Premier Accredited Center. We are based in Manor, TX, and serve Travis, Bastrop, and Williamson Counties and surrounding areas.
     
     Our PATH Intl certified instructors and equine specialists believe deeply in the transformative power of the horse-human connection, and the ability for individuals from all backgrounds to improve their emotional, cognitive, and physical abilities. A central part of our team is, of course, the horses – our true teachers. We partner with a variety of breeds, shapes, and personalities of horses to meet the needs of our riders. Each horse goes through a careful screening process, both to ensure their temperament and soundness is appropriate for the program and to make sure this is the kind of work they will enjoy. We take pride in giving our horses the choice, both in the lessons they choose to be in and in their participation in the program. Like our instructors, our equines undergo consistent continuing education and additionally are specifically chosen after extensive evaluation to determine if their behavior, confidence, and physical abilities will fit into our participants / program needs.
     
     We are also supported by a community of volunteers that make our entire program possible. In lessons, in facility work, and more, each individual who comes out to the barn contributes to – and benefits from – the healing environment.
     
     Our Vision is to set the standard for equine-facilitated therapy through collaborative research, instructor training program and continued professional development for our own staff and others. We also pride ourselves on ensuring all equine-assisted activities are rooted in research and science. Each of our evidence-based programs allows us to pinpoint and address an array of challenges and disabilities. We are constantly refining our programs, setting a standard for the entire industry with the quality of our services. In addition, we strive to ensure any individual in need has access to the benefits of equine-facilitated therapy. We offer partial to full financial hardship assistance for each program, and veterans receive free services, always.
     
     Though each lesson is unique, building the bond between the equine and the individual anchors everything we do. Based on the theory that divides predatory animals from prey animals, we believe horses make the best therapy animals. Predators, such as dogs, need to hide their feelings to fool their prey, while prey animals—such as horses—do not. In this sense, the horse acts as a living biofeedback machine, providing valuable information to the instructor and deepening the effectiveness of the therapy. Many people who we serve have experienced trauma and their brains lean more toward the tendencies of prey animals rather than predators. It’s the unique sensitivities shared by both human and horse that create a deep bond with transformative effects.
     
     Our 3 year rolling strategic plan outlines goals in key areas such as organizational, financial, marketing, programs, workforce, and facilities. It outlines our board needs, how we will achieve our financial needs, what program and employee (people and equine) growth and direction we will be taking, and our dreams for our facilities.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
     At Healing with Horses Ranch, we use the power of the horse to build resilience in at-risk individuals who have experienced emotional and physical harm, often leading to complicated challenges in their future. For individuals who are particularly vulnerable to internal and external triggers, interactions with horses provide a non-competitive, non-judgmental setting to build their capacity, while providing the individuals with relationships that are both caring and consistent. For this population, we focus on building self-awareness, enabling the individual to work through unexpressed emotional pain and learn how to recognize, verbalize and regulate his/her feelings. This is the imperative first step in the emotional recovery process and has improved psychological healing in remarkably short periods of time.
     
     We serve veterans, many who return from active duty with physical and/or emotional wounds. Horses assist these individuals through the challenges of transitioning back to civilian life. In the lessons, the bonding activities require the horse to look up to the rider for instruction and safety. As a result, the veteran focuses on their relationship with the horse by practicing a subtle form of communication based on sensitivity and patience. This type of bonding facilitates a quicker recovery or adaptation to post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related conditions. Together, the horse and veteran work on relaxation, memory skills, patience, confidence, physical wellness, and focus translating to life beyond the ranch.
     
     Adaptive riding lessons improve independence and functional life skills for people with disabilities such as Down syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, spina bifida, and many other disabilities. Because horseback riding rhythmically moves the rider's body in a manner similar to a human gait, riders with physical disabilities often improve in flexibility, balance, muscle strength, and range of motion. In addition, due to the non-verbal communication between a horse and human, individuals learn to be sensitive to other’s needs, heightening their social awareness. Our program improves physical and cognitive skills that spark new independence within the rider that they can then carry over into everyday life.
     
     Healing with Horses Ranch offers three core services under the umbrella of equine-facilitated learning and therapy. Each session is specifically designed to best support riders’ individual needs and goals:
     
     
     Through our Adaptive Riding (AR) program students with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges improve independence and functional life skills all while learning to ride. The rhythmic, three-dimensional and symmetrical movement of the horse provides physical benefits, and the connection and communication with both the horse and the community of the ranch foster social skills, emotional management, self-awareness, sensory integration, language skills and more. It is a fun, safe, and social environment, centered around interaction with the horse.
     
     Our Equine-Facilitated Learning (EFL) program is an experiential learning program that promotes the development of life skills for educational, professional and personal growth through equine-assisted activities. With a focus on veterans and at-risk individuals, EFL creates an environment for creating new toolsets for individuals to overcome challenges in the day-to-day.
     
     Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP) is an interactive process in which a licensed mental health professional working with a PATH Certified Equine Specialist and suitable equine(s) to address psychotherapy goals set forth by the mental health professional and the client. These sessions can be individual sessions, group sessions, or family sessions that focus on various aspects of mental and psychological wellness.


At a time when equestrian sports are under pressure to protect horses while making those sports more accessible, so too must all equine organizations ensure that horses are treated humanely when interacting with people with and without special needs. Our organization takes the following steps to ensure that horses are benefiting from their interactions with people:
     Our staff are trained or certified as Equine Specialists through PATH Intl.and work hard at teaching how horses communicate to us to not only our participants, but also our volunteers. We strive to teach empathy towards our partners at all times!
     
     PATH Intl Instructor will check for changes in physical soundness and behavior of each equine prior to its assignment to an activity or therapy session so as to ensure that the equine is able to perform as needed. Equine will be removed from current session if required.
     The Equine Manager will assess and remove equine from future sessions until soundness and/or behavior issues can be addressed.
     The Equine Manager will make a notation in the Equine Conditioning Log about why they should not be scheduled.
     The Equine Manager, in conjunction with other PATH Intl instructors, veterinarian consultation (if needed), farrier consultation (if needed), and or other experts in equine management, will determine the best way to address soundness or behavior issues.
     
     
     Instructors and therapist strive to limit horse usage to no more than 3 times per day including conditioning team rides, but never more than 6 hours per day
     Our goal is to give each equine at least a 1 hour break in between each 1 to 2 hour session where the horse has free access to water and hay.
     Equines will never be worked for more than 3 continuous hours.
     Equines will carry no more than 20% of their weight (including tack).
     Equines will be weighed via weight tape estimates at least annually
     The equine manager will determine weight limitations beyond the 20% if needed.
     Weight limitations will be noted on the feed board and in the Equine Health records.
     Equine work hours will be tracked by the Equine Manager, Instructors, and conditioning team riders on the Equine Conditioning Log.


Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     We occasionally will bring our miniature horse, pony, or donkey to community events such as Christmas in the Park.
     
     Also, we have had groups out for field trips to educate them on therapeutic riding and the benefits that horses have on humans.
