III. POLICIES

1. Describe your equine management philosophies, practices, policies and operations with respect to the use of the horses in your program, including the rehabilitation and retraining (if applicable), ongoing training, schooling and exercising plan for each horse and your policy as to the number and condition of the horses accepted by your organization. 
     Equine management goal is to have fit, happy horses that are ready and able to do their job. We believe in lots of turnout and our equines are fed hay three times a day. They work a maximum of 3 lessons a day and get two days off a week. We operate spring, summer and fall so they have down time in the winter in addition to a break in August for a few weeks. We have an exercise rider who is responsible for all our horses’ fitness. The equine coordinator and exercise rider regularly work with the horses in hand refreshing them so they are ready for program. The instructors communicate regularly with the exercise rider and equine coordinator about all horses and any behaviors that need to be addressed.

2. Describe how your horses are acquired (adoption, seizure, surrender, donation, purchase, auction sale, retirement). 
     Our horses are acquired a variety of ways some are free leased to the organization, some are purchased and some are donated.

3. Describe under what circumstances horses leave your organization. Please describe in detail your horse adoption/fostering practices and procedures including any recruitment initiatives you have to attract potential adopters. Please include your policies and practices with respect to horses that are no longer useful or manageable and horses that need to be retired. 
     Being a therapeutic riding horse requires a lot both physically and mentally. Many of our riders have low tone and are unbalanced which is physically hard on horses. In addition our horses must remain calm when riders are upset (crying etc.) or impulsive (move quickly). By the nature of the job many of our horses are older and as long as they are comfortable we will keep them in the program and adjust their work load as needed. If at some point they need to be retired we have a network of supporters to whom we reach out in order to find a suitable retirement situation. A few horses have left our organization because they no longer enjoy doing their job. In the last 20 years only 3 horses decided that the job was not for them and we found them all homes where they had able bodied riders and they are much happier.

4. For new horses, describe your initial assessment process for each horse (i.e. physical examination, test ride, health record, Coggins test, quarantine, veterinary consult, etc.). 
     All prospective horses are test ridden and tested in hand with side-walkers, toys etc. to make sure they are suitable for the job and we require a minimum trial period of 2 weeks. Our veterinarian does an evaluation to ensure they are healthy and sound enough to do the job. We get a vaccination history and Coggins from the seller.

5. Describe your overall horse health care plan and how you assess and monitor the health of your horses on an ongoing basis. Include a description of your vaccination and worming schedule. Include a description of your health/veterinary care plan for at-risk animals, geriatric horses and horses with serious issues.

6. What is the euthanasia policy? Please include specifically under what circumstances your organization will euthanize a horse and whether your organization will euthanize a healthy but difficult horse for space: 
     Many of our equines are seniors and we have great respect for them and would never want them to suffer. We have a strong relationship with our vet and would discuss all options and as a team decide what was in the best interest of the horse. Any horse that is in constant pain and would not be comfortable in a retirement situation would be euthanized. Regarding surgery either for colic or a trauma this is decided on case by case bases but we are a nonprofit therefore finances are a factor that must be considered in addition to prognosis following surgery.

7. What is the breeding policy? Please include specifically if horses become pregnant while in your care, and if there is a no-breeding clause in the documentation your organization uses to adopt, donate, sell, etc. a horse: 
     This does not apply to our organization. We do not have any mares in foal nor do we plan to have a breeding program.

     Little Britches leases Tophet Road Farm. The current lease agreement started 1/1/2017 and ends 12/31/17. We have operated at this farm for more than 15 years so barring any unforeseen issue we will renew the lease agreement in January of 2018.

2. Describe the number and type of pastures and paddocks, fencing, enclosures, stabling including barns and run-in sheds. The stabling consists of a 4 stall main barn. 2 stall smaller barn and 1 run in shed. There is one large pasture and 6 smaller paddocks. All fencing is post and rail.

3. Describe how you manage the use of your pastures/paddocks given the size and number of your pastures/paddocks and the number of horses you have at this facility.
     All stalls open into paddocks and horses/ponies have access to turnout 24/7. All paddocks are cleaned 2-3 times a week. There are 2 dirt paddocks other 4 paddocks have limited grass. The upper grass pasture is used depending on the weather for those horses that can be turned out on grass. There are 7 horses/ponies at the facility.

     Most of the lessons take place in the upper grass pasture which has a fenced in ring area. This area is mowed as needed. In addition there is a sand ring which is dragged on a as needed bases.

     Little Britches is a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship Center Member.

9. Describe the availability/accessibility of emergency horse transportation at this facility.
     There is a 2 horses tag-along trailer and 3 horses goose-neck trailer on the premise in addition to a towing vehicle.

11. Describe the plan, process and/or procedures to insure appropriate assessment of tack and the use for saddle fittings, tack, blankets, etc.
     All equipment is cleaned and checked regularly to insure that it is in good repair. Any damaged equipment is repaired or replaced immediately.All horses are assigned their own bridles, halters, girths and blankets. Saddles are assigned to each horse and a professional saddle fitter is contacted if there is a need.

12. Describe the system used by your organization to help staff and volunteers readily identify each horse on the property.
     We have a very small staff and they know all the horses/ponies. Any new employee would work with an existing staff member until they are confident with our animals and work flow pattern. Volunteers are not allowed in the barn without a staff member. All volunteers must complete a volunteer training. All equipment is labeled with the equines name.

13. Describe your housing plan and the turnout process/plan for horses normally stall bound.
     All of our horses/ponies have access to turnout 24/7.

14. Describe your feed, feed management plan and your guidelines for the use of supplements.
     Each animal's feed is determined based on individual animal's needs including age, breed. size etc. The equine coordinator with support from our vet and/or equine nutritionist creates and monitors a feed plan for each animal.

15. How do you use the Henneke Body Conditioning Score to guide you in your hennekeing/exercising/use practices for each horse?
     Little Britches meets with the local Purina equine nutritionist once a year to go over all horses and review their individual feed plans. We use a weight tape monthly on are really easy keepers to ensure that they do not start gaining weight. As far as exercise plans we do not want extremely fit horses our exercise rider maintains general fitness and refreshes the behavioral expectations necessary to be a therapy horse.

16. Please describe your activities to limit or control the advent and spread of disease within your facility (Biosecurity plan). This should include but is not limited to your manure management and disposal procedures, your carcass disposal plan and your parasite control plan. Please indicate the role of your veterinarian in the development and implementation of your overall plan.
     All paddocks are picked up 2/3 times a week and stalls are cleaned daily. There is a dumpster for manure and it is emptied on a as needed basis. We have a closed herd except on the rare occasion that a new horse is added to program. Little Britches requires a vaccination history and negative coggins on any new horse. In addition a new horse is separated from the existing herd and monitored (including temperature readings 2x/day) for 2 weeks before being introduced to the existing herd. Little Britches carcass disposal plan is to use Connecticut Horse Crematorium. Fecal test for worms are done yearly and deworming schedule is determined based on test results.

17. Please describe your emergency preparedness plans that address weather related issues, fire safety procedures and/or any additional hazardous scenarios your facility could potentially experience.
     LB Emergency Plan 1st aid kit in the barn both human and equine Flashlights and extra batteries in the barn Emergency contact list posted in barn at all times In the case of an emergency and the horses do not need to be moved. - Maintain at least 2 weeks’ worth of feed, hay, & shavings at the farm - If a storm is forecasted fill extra containers with water enough for at least 3 days - Contact neighbor (has a generator) pre-storm to confirm access to water in case we are without power for more than 3 days. (There is not a generator at the farm) In the case of an emergency and horses needed to evacuate our horse - Contact network of barn owners that could temporarily house our horses (they would not all go to the same location) - Pre storms fuel towing vehicles - There are two trailers on premise if horses needed to be moved

     We operate out of a private farm so it is not open to the public.The only time people are coming and going is during program hours. There is a caretaker on-premise in addition to the farm owner.
