Primary Focus involving horses (Horse Welfare, Public Service, Sport & Recreation): Horse Welfare
Our organization operates programs involved with horse rescue, foster care, rehabilitation, adoption and/or retirement.
Our organization operates programs involved with providing equine assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) using certified instructors for individuals with special needs. Our organization is directly responsible for the care and shelter of horses.
Our Mission/How we are involved with horses:
Saving Thoroughbred horses, no longer able to compete on the racetrack, from possible neglect, abuse, and slaughter. Those not suitable for retraining and adoption become part of our correctional facility-based vocational training program in equine care and stable management. We also provide lifelong care at private retirement farms nationwide.
General Volunteer In South CarolinaThe TRF South Carolina committee supports three TRF farms in South Carolina, including at the Wateree Correctional Facility in Rembert. No hands-on horsecare volunteers are needed, but we always appreciate help with fundraising, events, and marketing.
General Volunteer At James River Farm In VirginiaOur correctional facility-based farm in State Farm, VA, is always looking for competent volunteers who are willing to plan fundraisers, attend events, and help with other tasks. The horses are cared for by inmates in the vocational training program so no volunteers are needed for farm work or riding.
General Volunteer At Montpelier Farm In VirginiaOur Montpelier Farm in Virginia is always looking for volunteers to help with fundraising, office work, and hands-on horsecare. Also, experienced riders may help with retraining adoptable horses, as the farm manager deems appropriate.
Pasture FencingWe have thousands of acres of pasture that require constant fencing maintenance. Many of our farm can provide the labor if you can provide the lumber.
Feed And SupplementsA number of our horses require extra nutrition, particularly the older members of our herd. Senior feeds and senior support supplements are in high demand at TRF farms.
PhotographersMany of our farms have horses available for adoption, fostering, and sponsorship, and having current, high quality photographs of them makes a big difference.
Gift Card For Staples Or Office MaxOur farms and programs require a lot of administrative support from our main office and we always need basics office supplies.
Printing ServicesWe print a lot of materials for our fundraisers, events, and mailings and having those services donated would make a big difference.
VaccinesOur horses live in 13 different states and most require different vaccines at least twice a year. Are you a veterinarian or supplier who could donate some standard vaccines?
Basic Farrier ServicesMost of our horses are unshod and live outside all day, but trimming 4,400 hooves every couple of months is a huge expense. We would love for farriers (or farrier trainees) to donate some of their time and skills.
Horse TreatsOur horses love any kind of non-perishable treats. Ones that come in firm containers (rather than bags) are especially appreciated.
Grooming SuppliesGrooming supplies of any kind. Sturdy, good quality, and bright colors (easier to see if they get put down in a field!) are the best.
HayGood quality hay is the mainstay of our retirees during the winter months.
Fly SprayAll of our horses (1,100 of them!) are turned out 24 hours a day so we need a lot of fly spray during bug season.
Large Round Bale Hay FeedersHelp us prevent wasted hay by donating large round bale feeders.
