EQUUS Foundation Announces 2018 Grant Recipients
The Board of Directors of the EQUUS Foundation is proud to announce that the EQUUS Foundation awarded over $200,000 in grants to qualified equine organizations this year.
The EQUUS Foundation awards small grants ranging from $500 to $5,000 to charities that undergo the EQUUS Foundation comprehensive and unique verification process and receive the EQUUS Foundation Guardian designation. Especially now, with the advent of the internet and social media, it is essential to make sure that organizations making appeals to potential donors and grant makers are fully transparent and operating at the highest standards.
"These charities are so grateful for the support we provide. They not only benefit from the financial assistance, but also the process helps improve their governance, staffing, and volunteer management as well as their horse care and service practices," said Lynn Coakley, EQUUS Foundation President. "The thanks we received from Brook Hill Farm and Begin Again Horse Rescue reflects the philosophy of the 130 equine charities receiving awards this year."

"While the awards are appreciated, these small grants represent less than 1% of the total direct horse care costs of the grant recipients," continued Coakley. "Over 75,000 American horses were shipped over the border for slaughter in 2017 - most were young, healthy and had untapped potential. Instead, they could be sharing their magic and power with people, like the 'lucky ones', who were saved from slaughter and rehabilitated, retrained and re-homed."
"Going forward, we will be ramping up our efforts to inspire more horse lovers to be horse protectors so that we can increase the number and capacity of equine charities dedicated to rehoming horses in transition and increase the number and capacity of equine charities dedicated to equine assisted learning and therapy."
Horse Whisperer Awards
A select group of charities are designated as Horse Whisperer Award Recipients each year by the EQUUS Foundation Board of Directors. The Horse Whisperers is the Foundation's named awards program for a special group of people and organizations who are inspired by the magical and powerful impact horses have on our lives.
