Mission:To promote and enhance the welfare of individuals with disabilities by providing a program of therapeutic, educational and recreational value, and further; to empower individuals who are physically, intellectually, emotionally, behaviorally and/or developmentally challenged through the use of horses, while providing therapeutic benefits in a safe and controlled atmosphere.
Our organization conducts Equine Assisted Services in accordance with the
EQUUS Foundation Guidelines on Qualifications of Organizations Conducting Equine Assisted Services (EAS).
Our organization provides outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.

Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:2024 was HORSEPOWER’s 29th year of providing equine assisted activities. Our strategic goals for the last five years were completed in 2024.
We completed all phases of our construction on our facility. We increased our horse herd to twenty-three to meet our therapeutic program needs. Horse sponsors were secured for all of our horses to help cover the cost of our program. Two additional instructors were added, and we were able to increase our services to an average of 150 participants per week. We completed our succession plan as our Founder stepped down from her role of 29 years as the Executive Director and our Operations Manager smoothly stepped into that role. We expanded our services, providing EAA to youth in transitional housing. The Horsepower Foundation initiated the HORSEPOWER Endowment campaign with donations and pledges of $625,000 at the end of 2024, helping with our sustainability for our future.
Our long-term plan is to continue to grow our endowment for future funding. Continue to find sponsors for our horses, keeping our time and energy for fundraising to a minimum. Continue to provide the premium services we have in the past by following our PATH and Equus guidelines.

HORSEPOWER is a PATH Premier Accredited Center. We adhere to all PATH and EQUUS guidelines.
All of our activities consider the physical and mental well-being of our equine partners. We follow our written guidelines when we consider a new equine for our program. Careful thought is given before an equine is visited and evaluated for our program. We take into consideration age, disposition, health, experience and the owner’s opinion of the equines ability to accept the different circumstances of our program.
When we evaluate a new program equine, a team of two or three individuals visit and introduce a therapeutic riding environment. If all team members agree that the equine shows no sign of stress or discomfort, and they meet all of our guidelines we will accept the equine for a 30-day trial period. After arriving at our facility, each equine is kept in quarantine and given a settling in period to allow time to adapt to its new environment. Then, slowly they will be introduced to the arena, barn and other areas of the new home.
Each staff member is trained in all aspects of the program including equine protocol. All volunteers go through training to fill any roles at HORSEPOWER. In every aspect of our program, all partners are treated with respect and care, including our equines. Only individuals who show the aptitude to understand the importance of proper care are allowed to help with the care and handling of our equines. Noise and physical activities are minimized in the barn and pasture area to give our equine partners the quiet time that they need. All activities are supervised by a trained staff member.
Each equine is classified as which type of class they can work in, how much weight they can carry (if any), what feed and supplements they should have, and what herd they are turned out with. Each is on a set schedule for veterinary, farrier and dental visits. They are closely monitored for signs of stress or illness. If any signs are shown, they are removed from the program and evaluated for their needs. At that time, they will be treated and only returned to work when they are no longer showing signs.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
We operate our program for 40 weeks yearly - with five 6-week sessions, 5-weeks of summer camp and 5 weeks of make-up classes. Twelve weeks are for time off and non-therapeutic riding for horse health.
Classes throughout the year address: communication, social, behavioral, recreational, and fitness goals. All goals are designed to meet the current needs of clients providing them with opportunities to practice, transfer, and acquire critical skills that can be applied to their daily life.
We provide 5 six-week sessions and separate 4-week half day summer sessions utilizing 10 PATH certified instructors and 19 therapeutic horses. One of those summer camps is a 10-year partnership with UNCG's Department of Communication Sciences & Disorders where intensive communication-based interventions have assisted community members living with communication needs.
Horsepower has one Speech & Language Therapist who provides one class per week with two to 4 students. This class mirrors our therapeutic side. Horsepower provides equine Learning for individuals with disabilities, youth identified as At-Risk and Veterans.
Our equine activities foster the development of skills that increase autonomy, encourage constructive co-dependence, and nurture problem solving in the home, school, and community. Our project combines horseback riding which increases balance, effective communication, academics, social, behavioral, recreational and/or therapeutic objectives.
Outreach and/or Public Education:

Horsepower works with local schools for tours of our facility and instruction on how our program works. Additionally, we set up information booths at local schools and functions. Our programs also include team building for corporate companies and an At-Risk youth program.
Research/Medical Use of Equines:Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine.
Religious Affiliation:Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered.
Auction Donation:Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter.
POLICIES: INTAKE, ASSESSMENT & TRAINING
Prior to a horse being accepted and/or arriving at the facility, the organization has the following policies in place:
