Mission:Our mission is to support the growth and well-being of all individuals, including those with special needs by providing Equine Assisted Services (EAS) in a safe, caring and professional environment.

Shepard Meadows Equestrian Center, Inc. provides Equine-Assisted Services (or EAS) under three umbrellas:
Horsemanship – Unmounted, Therapeutic Riding, Horseback Riding
Learning – Youth Development and Equine-Assisted Learning
Therapy – Psychotherapy, Music
Community is the foundation of everything we do at Shepard Meadows. Our programs will continue to develop and grow, as they have over the sixteen years since our founding – and the past two years with the pandemic. It is critical that we understand and respond to the needs of our community. Current programs include:

In 2022 we served a record number of participants of all ages across all our programs with over 2,000 hours of service. Our equine-assisted learning and psychotherapy programs experienced the most growth. New collaborations include the salvation army, a domestic violence center, the senior center and the Bristol Public Schools.
The mission of Shepard Meadows remains unchanged. We continue to be a respite of tranquility and we are guided by our values: to care, encourage, inspire, support, trust, and understand.
We've outgrown our little barn. Our herd, programs and number of participants have doubled over the past few years and our facility needs to catch-up. A new barn and learning center will allow us to do just that!. With proper housing for our therapy horses and an attached learning center, we can safely and more effectively accommodate more participants for equine-assisted services. This dedicated building will provide direct access to both our indoor and outdoor arenas. It also includes a nearly 100 foot-long aisle that will allow for multiple horses to be cross-tied and readied for human-equine horsemanship, learning and therapy. The learning center will have all the resources we need to teach you and others, preparing them for the hands-on experiential learning with our equine partners. Our environmentally friendly plans include a 14 stall barn with a full aisle, wash stall, hay loft and automatic waterers. Building is planned to begin fall 2022. Naming opportunities are available.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
Therapeutic Horseback Riding - mounted horseback riding for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of people with disabilities through the teaching of horsemanship skills.
Youth Development - Our Unmounted Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) Program commonly consists of 6 weekly small-group lessons of one hour in length. A growing body of research demonstrates that teaching horsemanship skills can promote emotional and social well-being in participants, serve as character education, and promote the social skills and leadership of youth and children in particular. Specifically, horsemanship grows competencies in responsibility for self and others, as well as forming attitudes and actions that are the hallmark of safe, healthy, and informed communities.
Veterans Program - Our Veterans Programs are provided at no cost to Veterans and their families, for up to 24 weeks (8 spring, 4 summer, 8 fall, 4 winter) based on available funding. We provide both mounted and unmounted horsemanship programs for physical, emotional, social, recreational and educational gains. NEW for Spring 2020, we are introducing a combined Blacksmithing and Horsemanship program – double the fun and come work in the blacksmith shop with friends, then stay on for horsemanship and/or volunteering around the farm. We need your help!
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy - is the combined use of horses, a licensed therapist and an equine specialist working with individuals to address various individual psychotherapy goals. This unique process enables individuals to learn about themselves and others by actually participating in activities with the horses, and then processing/discussing feelings, behaviors and patterns with the therapist.
Community Lessons - Our programs are open to all members of the community, whether you are looking for general horsemanship classes, or horseback riding lessons. You may be interested in riding again after a hiatus, or perhaps you always wanted to take up horseback riding, but never had the opportunity – we are here to help you reach your goals.
Individuals who are interested in riding lessons generally follow our Therapeutic Riding Program seasonal program schedules, 8 weeks spring and fall, with two four-week long summer sessions. Winter unmounted horsemanship lessons are also an option.
At a time when equestrian sports are under pressure to protect horses while making those sports more accessible, so too must all equine organizations ensure that horses are treated humanely when interacting with people with and without special needs. Our organization takes the following steps to ensure that horses are benefiting from their interactions with people:
We have a herd of eight horses, including one mule and one mini. Our horses are observed, handled and cared for daily with all notices and variances logged and reported. We have daily discussions about all aspects of their behavior. We track all trainings and usage to assure they are fit and happy, making whatever accommodations are needed. Our policies and procedures assure that the horses are benefiting from their interactions with people.

Community Horsemanship and Riding - Mounted and unmounted programs available to all members in the community when space is available.
We hold three open-houses per year at the farm. One for Veterans, Volunteers and a Holiday Open House where we provide literature and tours to the public. We also attend several of the special events in our community staffed with our personnel and literature such as health fairs and various races.
Research/Medical Use of Equines:
Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine.

Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered.

Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter.

Additional information about our intake, assessment & training policies and practices:
Horses are required to have all proper immunizations including Coggins BEFORE coming to the property. This includes a health certificate, all current vaccinations, dental care, de-worming.
Prior to transport to the farm several visits may have been taken to evaluate a horse for our program including body condition. If professional staff feel there is any question about a horse, our veterinarian would be called pre-transport for a professional opinion, or after arrival to the farm. All horses are evaluated annually by our veterinarian, usually in the spring.
The facility or facilities where our organization conducts its programs, including foster facilities, does NOT breed equines.
Our organization will never have an equine euthanized for space
Our organization will never have a healthy equine euthanized under any circumstances

It is rare that we would need to rehome a horse. Previous owners have first rights, and free-leased horses are returned to their owners. Horses that have served the organization for some time, are free to retire here (we currently have a 33 year old enjoying her well-deserved retirement). If it did become necessary, we would not advertise, but seek to place the horse with an individual already connected with our organization, such as an employee or volunteer that we know quite well.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
Therapeutic Horseback Riding - mounted horseback riding for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of people with disabilities through the teaching of horsemanship skills.
Youth Development - Our Unmounted Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) Program commonly consists of 6 weekly small-group lessons of one hour in length. A growing body of research demonstrates that teaching horsemanship skills can promote emotional and social well-being in participants, serve as character education, and promote the social skills and leadership of youth and children in particular. Specifically, horsemanship grows competencies in responsibility for self and others, as well as forming attitudes and actions that are the hallmark of safe, healthy, and informed communities.
Veterans Program - Our Veterans Programs are provided at no cost to Veterans and their families, for up to 24 weeks (8 spring, 4 summer, 8 fall, 4 winter) based on available funding. We provide both mounted and unmounted horsemanship programs for physical, emotional, social, recreational and educational gains. NEW for Spring 2020, we are introducing a combined Blacksmithing and Horsemanship program – double the fun and come work in the blacksmith shop with friends, then stay on for horsemanship and/or volunteering around the farm. We need your help!
Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy - is the combined use of horses, a licensed therapist and an equine specialist working with individuals to address various individual psychotherapy goals. This unique process enables individuals to learn about themselves and others by actually participating in activities with the horses, and then processing/discussing feelings, behaviors and patterns with the therapist.
Community Lessons - Our programs are open to all members of the community, whether you are looking for general horsemanship classes, or horseback riding lessons. You may be interested in riding again after a hiatus, or perhaps you always wanted to take up horseback riding, but never had the opportunity – we are here to help you reach your goals.
Individuals who are interested in riding lessons generally follow our Therapeutic Riding Program seasonal program schedules, 8 weeks spring and fall, with two four-week long summer sessions. Winter unmounted horsemanship lessons are also an option.
At a time when equestrian sports are under pressure to protect horses while making those sports more accessible, so too must all equine organizations ensure that horses are treated humanely when interacting with people with and without special needs. Our organization takes the following steps to ensure that horses are benefiting from their interactions with people:
We have a herd of eight horses, including one mule and one mini. Our horses are observed, handled and cared for daily with all notices and variances logged and reported. We have daily discussions about all aspects of their behavior. We track all trainings and usage to assure they are fit and happy, making whatever accommodations are needed. Our policies and procedures assure that the horses are benefiting from their interactions with people.
Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Community Horsemanship and Riding - Mounted and unmounted programs available to all members in the community when space is available.
We hold three open-houses per year at the farm. One for Veterans, Volunteers and a Holiday Open House where we provide literature and tours to the public. We also attend several of the special events in our community staffed with our personnel and literature such as health fairs and various races.
Research/Medical Use of Equines:
Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine.

It is rare that we would need to rehome a horse. Previous owners have first rights, and free-leased horses are returned to their owners. Horses that have served the organization for some time, are free to retire here (we currently have a 33 year old enjoying her well-deserved retirement). If it did become necessary, we would not advertise, but seek to place the horse with an individual already connected with our organization, such as an employee or volunteer that we know quite well.
