Moon
Our Equine Ambassador
Moon is a miniature horse that was born in 2010. He is a dark bay with a star that is shaped like a quarter moon, thus his name! We rescued Moon four years ago from a rescue organization. Over time and with training he has settled into his job at the therapeutic center. His work include equine-assisted psychotherapy with trauma victims, hippotherapy, specifically speech and language, and with youth development and seniors with equine-assisted learning where he teaches grooming, including picking his hoofs, haltering and leading. He has his own little shed and paddock area that is centrally located, so he serves as a visitor greeter too! Because we don't ride him he takes staff, visitors and volunteers for long walks on our sensory trail for exercise. As you notice from his photo (with the raspberry beret) he also helps with fundraising at our annual gala through his paintings - acrylic on canvas, where the paintings are auctioned off. Moon is one special equine and we all love him to the moon and back! We are beyond proud to nominate our mini moon as our Equine Ambassador for 2024!


MISSION & PROGRAMS

Mission:
Our mission is to support the growth and well-being of all individuals, including those with special needs by providing Equine Assisted Services (EAS) in a safe, caring and professional environment.

Our organization conducts Equine Assisted Services in accordance with the EQUUS Foundation Guidelines on Qualifications of Organizations Conducting Equine Assisted Services (EAS).
Our organization provides community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses.
Our organization is directly responsible for the care and shelter of equines involved in our programs.
Over 90% of our total programs and services are equine-related.

Our organization does not CURRENTLY use satellite, overflow, foster, and/or outreach facilities.


Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:
Shepard Meadows Equestrian Center had a terrific 2023! We proudly completed our beautiful new 15 stall barn, with wash stall, heated tack room, hay loft and attached learning center. We were also able to reconfigure our paddocks and turn-out areas and purchased four new run-in sheds. While we were not able to ride during construction, we conducted unmounted horsemanship lessons, expanding our reach to senior citizens and within youth development. We met our program service target of over 2,000 hours of service.
     
     In 2023 we added hippotherapy to our program offering including physical therapy and speech and language services. Two staff members trained and received certification in two new areas, one as an Equine Facilitator and a second as an Equine Gestaltist. Being a relatively small organization, we benefit by our ability to be creative, innovative, flexible and responsive to community needs. We truly believe that the more individuals we have at the farm, the better off the world will be!
     
     We also added workshops and a free quarterly educational speaker series to broaden our reach and share equine-assisted services and their benefits with a larger audience.
     
     Our annual Farmyard Party - the primary fundraiser of the year also grew again this year with respect to the number in attendance and funds raised to support our programs, horses and facility.
     
     Board development continues to be a priority for us. We have engaged the services of a professional to guide our strategic planning forward and as an entire organization we are re-working our mission, vision and values to assure we are working together to move the organization forward.
     
     We are proud of our organization, our growth, our services and off course our wonderous therapy herd who provide their angelic realm to all they come into contact with.

Please describe what steps your organization takes to ensure that:

1) the interactions between your equines and people are mutually beneficial and conducted in accordance with the Guidelines for Human-Equine Interactions stated below;
2) all equines in the care of our organization and/or equines that participate in the organization's program have access to clean drinking water at all times; nutritious food in sufficient quantity, including natural forage such as pasture grass and/or hay; appropriate veterinary, farrier, and dental care; shelter and protection from the weather; sufficient safe space to move around comfortably on a daily basis; and daily opportunity to freely interact and have contact with other equines:

1) Our therapy herd is the foundation of the organization and we meet each and every one of them exactly where they are. We always consider the comfort and dignity of the equine as paramount and promote the utmost respect for the equine as a sentient partner and not as a commodity or inanimate object. This belief is directly transferred to our teaching and is modeled consistently for our participants, their families who visit and our volunteers. Safety is the first priority for our staff, participants and horses. Our administration and personnel are appropriately trained and experienced, and always consider the horses' health and welfare first. We communicate daily on each horse and the staff absolutely have the authority to remove an equine from participation upon signs of stress. As a Premier PATH center we have written policies and procedures in place for horse selection and activity selection including contingency and first aid plans regarding emergencies. We maintain thorough documentation on each equine, tracking all aspects of their medical care, feed, training and program work. Our mission, vision and values are based on our participants having a safe and transformative equine-assisted experience.
     
     2) Our fields, stall and paddocks are cleaned and monitored twice daily. We have automatic waterers in our stalls and most of our turn-outs. Those without an automatic waterer have large water buckets (with access to electricity in winter to prevent freezing) and near faucets for filling. Hay is provided three times a day and our turn-out areas have hay feeders to keep the hay clean and to reduce waste. We are located on 26 acres and we grow about 1,000 bales per year of our own hay. We have several hay fields reserved for grazing - pasture grass. Hay is supplemented through a local grower. Our horses are on a regular schedule for farrier service, dental and veterinary care. Our paddocks all have high quality shelter. Our horses are turned out in groups of two or individually depending on preference, but they can always see each other clearly and are within close distance to one another.

Overview of our programs involved with providing EAS to individuals with special needs:
     Therapeutic Horseback Riding - mounted horseback riding for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of people with disabilities through the teaching of horsemanship skills.
     
     Youth Development - Our Unmounted Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) Program commonly consists of 6 weekly small-group lessons of one hour in length. A growing body of research demonstrates that teaching horsemanship skills can promote emotional and social well-being in participants, serve as character education, and promote the social skills and leadership of youth and children in particular. Specifically, horsemanship grows competencies in responsibility for self and others, as well as forming attitudes and actions that are the hallmark of safe, healthy, and informed communities.
     
     Veterans Program - Our Veterans Programs are provided at no cost to Veterans and their families, for up to 24 weeks (8 spring, 4 summer, 8 fall, 4 winter) based on available funding. We provide both mounted and unmounted horsemanship programs for physical, emotional, social, recreational and educational gains.
     
     Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy - is the combined partnership of horses, a licensed therapist and an equine specialist working with individuals to address various individual psychotherapy goals. This unique process enables individuals to learn about themselves and others by actually participating in activities with the horses, and then processing/discussing feelings, behaviors and patterns with the therapist.
     
     Hippotherapy is a physical, occupational, and speech therapy that utilizes the natural gait and movement of a horse to provide motor, and sensory input. It is based on improvement of neurologic functions, and sensory processes, and used for patients with physical, and mental disorders.
     
     Equine-Assisted Learning is offered with a licensed educator and/or licensed mental health professional for youth and others.
     
     Equine Gestalt Coaching is provided by a certified Equine Gestaltist and horse handler in both private and group sessions.


Community Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing community outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
     Community Horsemanship and Riding - Mounted and unmounted programs available to all members in the community for personal gains.
     
     Our programs are open to all members of the community, whether you are looking for general horsemanship classes, or horseback riding lessons. You may be interested in riding again after a hiatus, or perhaps you always wanted to take up horseback riding, but never had the opportunity – we are here to help you reach your goals.
     
     Individuals who are interested in riding lessons generally follow our Therapeutic Riding Program seasonal program schedules, 8 weeks spring and fall, with two four-week long summer sessions. Winter unmounted horsemanship lessons are also an option.
     
     We hold three open-houses per year at the farm. One for Veterans, Volunteers and a Holiday Open House where we provide literature and tours to the public. We also attend several of the special events in our community staffed with our personnel and literature such as health fairs and road races, and festivals.
     
     We offer a Quarterly Educational Speaker Series at the farm in our learning center. The event is free to all members of our community. Topics may include horse management, educating about horses in general, as a partner to help humans, or program offerings in partnership with horses, such as Equine Gestalt Coaching.

Research/Medical Use of Equines:
Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine. 

Religious Affiliation:
Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered. 

Auction Donation:
Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter.

POLICIES: INTAKE, ASSESSMENT & TRAINING

Prior to a horse being accepted and/or arriving at the facility, the organization has the following policies in place:
    The owner of a potential equine is interviewed over the phone or in person prior to seeing the equine
    The equine is evaluated at its place of residence
    The owner completes an application/contract which constitutes the agreement between the owner and our organization when the equine is acquired from the equine's owner other than by purchase from an auction or kill pen, or by seizure or by abandonment
    The owner is financially responsible for the shipping of the equine to and from the organization

If professional staff feel there is any question about a horse, our veterinarian would be called pre-transport for a professional opinion, or after arrival to the farm. Additional information about our rehoming policies and practices:
It is rare that we would need to rehome a horse. Previous owners have first rights, and free-leased horses are returned to their owners. Horses that have served the organization for some time, are free to retire here (we currently have a 35-year-old enjoying her well-deserved retirement). If it did become necessary, we would not advertise, but seek to place the horse with an individual already connected with our organization, such as an employee or volunteer that we know quite well.
