Mission:Center for Racehorse Retraining aims to raise awareness about OTTBs, their ability to excel in a variety of disciplines, and promote the care they receive while at the track. Our goal is to facilitate the rehoming and rehabilitation for Thoroughbreds, as well as provide a sanctuary for horses that are no longer able to be ridden due to age, behavior, or unsoundness.

Summary of organization's recent accomplishments, goals, strategies to achieve the goals, and capabilities to meet the goals, including its long-term plans to sustain its programs:In 2024, Center for Racehorse Retraining shifted focus from rehoming to rehabilitation, retirement and research. CRR was featured in a podcast episode with The Humble Hoof and in a film for the IFAR Conference in Japan. CRR hosted Dr. Robert Bowker for lectures and subsequently started collaborating in research with him. The research goal is to improve outcomes for retired racehorses, as well as improve welfare for horses in general by examining management methods. Because CRR has a unique position with a lot of acreage, the shift toward retirement and rehabilitation seemed like a good move to provide needed services for horses most at risk. While rehoming will continue to be a small portion of CRR's mission, it is no longer the focus. CRR also started to work with Colorado State University's podiatry program to provide horses for veterinary students to practice hoof diagnostics, as well as providing horses for vet students to practice field medicine. The goal in 2025 is to continue to promote a movement focused management strategy for horses and to pursue research along those lines. The collaboration with Dr. Bowker continues, and collaborations with teams at Michigan State and Middle Tennessee are also in the planning stages. A regular blog is currently in development, as is a stronger social media presence. CRR is expanding the retirement and rehabilitation care to both organization owned horses, as well as personally owned horses.
Please describe what steps your organization takes to ensure that:

2) all equines in the care of our organization and/or equines that participate in the organization's program have access to clean drinking water at all times; nutritious food in sufficient quantity, including natural forage such as pasture grass and/or hay; appropriate veterinary, farrier, and dental care; shelter and protection from the weather; sufficient safe space to move around comfortably on a daily basis; and daily opportunity to freely interact and have contact with other equines:
The nature of the retirement program limits the interaction between equines and people other than for daily care, appropriate veterinary and farrier care, and retraining. Most of the horses are turned out on 2500 acres in a semi-feral environment. They are checked daily for general wellbeing, injuries, and any stress markers by volunteers. These daily checks are performed via off-road vehicles and do not require handling of the horses. Daily checks also include water, which are all open year round with a well and overflow system to avoid ice, as well as supply clean water. Hay and pasture quality are checked daily and adjustments are made daily as needed based on weather, grass quality, and wellbeing of the horses. In the event of inclement weather, horses are blanketed or moved to shelter as needed per individual. Horses are promptly seen for any injuries or illness by a vet and/or farrier, both of whom visit weekly. Emergency vet clinics are also available if needed.
The retraining program is based on a low-stress, classical approach. The horses progress slowly to avoid injury and fear in the horse, as well as reduce the risk of injury for the trainers. Due to the nature of the program, a small group of horses are in training at any given time.
Equine Transition Services:Overview of our programs involved with rescue, rehabilitation, retraining, re-homing and/or retirement:
Center for Racehorse Retraining accepts horses from tracks around the country. Most of the horses come from trainers that we have worked with for years. The trainers provide as much detail as possible about the horses, which we use to help find an appropriate career and home. Once the horse arrives, we evaluate the horse's behavior on the ground, in the field with other horses, under saddle, and in the stable. We also evaluate the horse's soundness and begin to rehabilitate any issues that the horse might have. If a horse is deemed unsound or unsuitable for a second career, the horse is retired. CRR offers a variety of situations from stall rest to small turnouts to a 2400-acre turnout, depending on what is best for the individual.
The trainers at the Center for Racehorse Retraining employ a background in classical training, a theory based on lightness, to help OTTBs rehabilitate and find their new potential. Trainers focus on helping horses rebuild their bodies post-racing by utilizing a slow, gentle and individualized approach. In addition to continued training, CRR also rehabilitates and provides a sanctuary for permanent retirees. With the advantage of spacious turnouts of rolling hills and plains in southeast Wyoming to explore, OTTBs have plenty of space for let-down after the conclusion of their racing careers. The unique setting offers a premier environment for strengthening and improving hoof quality and rebuilding body condition after retirement.
Outreach and/or Public Education:
Overview of our programs involved with providing outreach and/or public education programs involving horses:
Center for Racehorse Retraining encourages the local community college and university to visit on a regular basis with their animal sciences classes. The goal is to introduce future professionals to the equine industry, both nationally and regionally, and to discuss the impact of the racing industry on communities. CRR also discusses the care, handling and training that the horses receive at the track, all of which create a good foundation for second careers.
CRR is also active in conducting research regarding equine behavior and hoof care. This provides opportunities for CRR to discuss equine welfare and care to local groups, as well as on social media, thus providing a different perspective on horse care and rehabilitation by utilizing a native environment. CRR often discusses the positive impact that turnout on large acreage, a native diet, and barefoot care has on even extreme rehabilitation cases.
CRR has become active in providing educational opportunities, including clinics hosted on-site with industry professionals, hosting days for veterinary students from CSU to practice and learn from the horses, and utilizing online forums that demonstrate the benefits of a native lifestyle. CRR was featured in a film presentation that was shown at the IFAR Conference in Japan in 2024. This has increased conversations with farms in other countries about the benefits of a more natural lifestyle for horses. CRR also provides horses for veterinary students at CSU's Podiatry Clinic as cases to demonstrate podiatry techniques, as well as the influence of barefoot care on hoof health. In 2025, CRR will be hosting clinics for Progressive Horse Care Practitioners.
Research/Medical Use of Equines:Our organization has never made, and would not ever consider making, equines available for research studies or medical training that involves invasive procedures and/or that which may cause pain or suffering to the equine.
Religious Affiliation:Our organization does not promote religious education, religious purposes, or a specific religious faith or use donations for religious education or religious purposes; require participants to be of a certain faith; require participation in religious, instruction, activities or services; or require participation in prayer, worship, religious instruction or other religious activities as a condition of receiving social or secular services offered.
Auction Donation:Our organization has never allowed, or would not consider allowing, an equine to be sold, transferred, released, or otherwise placed into possession of any person or organization that would cause or allow the equine to be sold at auction for slaughter.
POLICIES: INTAKE, ASSESSMENT & TRAINING

This is a process of decision-making and planning that gives people the insight and tools needed to
understand the adoption process and holistic horse care. This results in better adoptions and better horse outcomes. It also allows us to balance key social, environmental, and financial considerations.
It is important to assess the adopter's capabilities both as a rider and as an owner. We evaluate the
safety of their facility and their off-horse skills. These include their ability to care for the horse, to transport the horse, to handle the horse safely in an administrative context, the type and quality of providers that they use for veterinarian, farrier, saddle-fitter, etc. This lets us pair the horse to the rider and ensures a profitable and lasting relationship between them post-adoption.
We also look to the adopter's goals and make sure that the horse they choose has the potential to meet those goals, given their capabilities.
Taken together this holistic approach ensures the best outcome for the adopter and the adopted horse.
With regards to breeding, CRR permits breeding of re-homed equines because on occasion that is the best second career for them. Prohibiting breeding would likely limit homes for some horses, including broodmares that can be used as recipient mares.

CRR horses that have been retired or have sanctuary/rehabilitation needs are housed on the pastures at this facility. An arena with space for stalls is available for horses that require more intensive care. Stocks are available for veterinary care, as well. There are a variety of pens with loafing sheds of various sizes for horses that need daily care, training or are in the process of transitioning to the large pasture. We maintain an electronic feed chart which is accessible to those who are responsible for feeding horses. Horses are monitored for condition and general health, under vet supervision, and diet is adjusted per individual needs.
