Primary Focus involving horses (Horse Welfare, Public Service, Sport & Recreation): Public Service
Our organization operates programs involved with horse rescue, foster care, rehabilitation, adoption and/or retirement.
Our organization operates programs involved with providing equine assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) using certified instructors for individuals with special needs. Our organization is directly responsible for the care and shelter of horses.
Our Mission/How we are involved with horses:
To Assist Individuals With Special Needs In Reaching Their Full Potential Through Interaction With Horses.
Farm Hand / Ranch HandMinimum Age: 16Feeding and cleaning up after 35 horses every day is a big job!! We need all the help we can get. No skills required, but ground skills with horses and tractor skills are always a plus.
Horse CareOur horses and ponies thrive on love and affection. Sometimes they need some extra attention like brushing, bathing, hoof cleaning, etc. Come help us love on our equine friends!
Side-walkersMinimum Age: 14SpiritHorse operates in two, 12-week semesters per year, in the spring and fall. During this time, clients come for one-hour sessions each week, with a designated horse and instructor. We have a strong focus on building independence, and clients assist, to the best of their ability, in all areas of preparation and horse-care: leading, grooming, putting on and removing equipment before and after their ride. This develops a sense of self-sufficiency and accomplishment, and also builds sequencing and speech skills. Many equine therapy centers cut out this portion of therapy, instead mounting the child on a horse already prepared for them; by involving them in this process we build skills and keep the focus on their ability rather than their disability.
We need the help of 2 Sidewalking Assistants per lesson and we provide 300+ lessons per week. We will provide the training. It is deeply fulfilling work to help a person with Special Needs accomplish their equine therapy goals.
Coastal HayOffering free-choice coastal hay to our horses is vital to their well being, but also one of our biggest expenses. Horse quality coastal hay (round or square bales) is needed year-round. But please, nothing that you would not feed your own horses!
PharmaceuticalsThe majority of our horses and ponies have special needs due to chronic conditions and/or injuries they sustained before they found their home at SpiritHorse. Meds are administered by our full time vet tech, under the direction of our team of veterinarians. The things we use most are: Bute (phenylbutazone), Prednisone tablets, MSM (feed supplement), One AC, Tri-Hist/Anti-Hist, Pergolide, Ace (acepromazine)injection, Rompum (xylaxine) injection, and lots and lots of vet wrap!
