A Lady’s Triumph
From Broken to Beloved: The Story of SUMMLIKEALADY
When SUMMLIKEALADY arrived at Unbridled Sanctuary, she was a shadow of the noble Thoroughbred she was born to be. Exploited by the lowest rungs of the racing industry, Lady was riddled with ulcers, gaunt in body, and in visible emotional and physical distress. Her eyes, once meant to reflect spirit and fire, were clouded with pain and confusion.
But at Unbridled, no horse is ever left unseen.
Lady was given the one thing no auction ring, track shedrow, or backstretch ever offered her: time. Time to heal. Time to breathe. Time to be a horse without condition. Slowly, through gentle care, a tailored diet, and a sanctuary of silence and kindness, Lady reclaimed her health—and her dignity. Her coat glistened. Her belly filled. Her nervous system softened. And in the stillness of safety, she found joy.
She also found friendship.
Two other Thoroughbreds—Cupola, a blue-blooded mare discarded to the slaughter pipeline, and Ballet Gallop, a curious and bright-eyed youngster—gravitated to Lady like a compass to true north. The trio became inseparable. Grazing partners. Nap buddies. Playmates. Listeners in our Read to the Rescues program. Three individuals bound not by blood, but by survival—and the choice to trust again.
And then, in October of 2021, came a moment that could only be described as divine alignment.
Lady, Baby, and Cupola were adopted together—as a bonded family—by Zorro’s Crossing, a sanctuary in Georgia inspired by the very work and mission of Unbridled. They became founding members of what is now a thriving sanctuary, built on the same principles of love, agency, and reverence that carried them out of harm’s way.
Today, Lady and her sisters roam safe pastures in the Georgia sun. They remain reading companions in the Read to the Rescues program, which has now expanded into their region—a full-circle legacy of healing, learning, and hope.
