I live in central Massachusetts and contacted NEER in the early Fall about adopting Channing because I suspected my 34 yr old thoroughbred might not make it through the winter and I wanted to keep the “herd” size at three. He was the devoted leader to two very independent jennies and I wanted to complete the introduction of a new equine before he passed on. Channing bonded strongly and quickly to the horse and initially showed little interest in the donkeys. However, as I had hoped, he stepped up nicely into the leadership position when my horse passed in December. The girls are somewhat ambivalent about his enthusiasm, but they are all keeping each other (and me) entertained through these long winter months. I can hardly wait for Spring when I can start working with him more. He is eager to learn and has a huge personality. And despite being around equine for the past 60 years, he is teaching me new things about how a hinny is neither horse nor donkey but their own very special thing!
