Our vision is that all horses naturally transition from one chapter to the next without risk of abuse, neglect and slaughter and that all horses involved in any role and in any capacity - as athletes, companions, laborers, teachers and healers - are safe, healthy and treated with dignity as partners. We have established four program goals and will be reaching out to the equestrian community for support.
• Raise public awareness that America's horses enhance our lives and need our protection and build consensus within the equine industry to embrace solutions for equines in transition other than shipping them across our borders for slaughter
• Establish and support local and regional safety net programs, such as hay banks, emergency funds, veterinarian help, gelding clinics, owner-to-owner equine placement services, and end-of-life care, and increasing ways to connect horses in transition with individuals and organizations seeking horses
• Provide scholarships to students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate equine studies programs at the educational institutions on the EQUUS Foundation
Equine Education Network to encourage the pursuit of careers in the equine industry
• Publicize the EQUUS Foundation's equine welfare standards and expand the recognition of equine organizations nationwide - both non-profit and for-profit - that adhere to these standards
At the core is the need to continue to educate the public on the positive impact of horses through collaborative storytelling andimprove communications -- communication among charities, communication within the equine industry and communication with the public at large.
