Mentors

The Mentor Accreditation is awarded annually to an organization that meets the EQUUS Foundation highest standards for business and equine welfare practices outlined here , having already met the requirements for Member participation on the Equine Welfare Network and the attainment of the EQUUS Foundation Guardian designation. A site visit, a self-assessment using the EQUUS Foundation site assessment tool, and/or a recommendation from an existing EQUUS Foundation Mentor may be required.

With the establishment of its Mentor Accreditation program in 2022, the Foundation expanded its role from grant maker to national accrediting body, using rigorous standards and review processes to recognize organizations demonstrating strong practices in equine welfare and organizational management. This recognition is part of the Foundation's ongoing work to strengthen the organizations caring for horses and expand opportunities for horses in transition.

The EQUUS Foundation's review process is central to this work. The Foundation looks beyond an organization's programs to examine the practices that support both the welfare of the horses and the organization's ability to provide that care over time. Strong equine welfare practices must be supported by sound governance, financial management, risk management, staffing and volunteer practices, transparency, and ongoing evaluation. Together, these practices help ensure that organizations are prepared not only to care for horses today, but to continue providing that care into the future.
